Learning Through Listening On The Road

(Podcasts and Audiobooks and how I track them for our Missouri homeschool hours)

Podcasts have become one of my favorite rhythms with my kiddos. We look forward to listening to the next episode every week as we drive to dance and back. It feels nostalgic to me, like when we had to wait an entire week for the next episode of a TV show to come on. The anticipation was part of the fun!

And the best part? There’s no stress attached to it!

Because podcast episodes are always available after they’re released, we have the freedom to switch things up when we want to. Some weeks we listen to our podcast. Other weeks we choose an audiobook or our Smart Kids Songs playlist for the drive. Then, when we’re ready, we come right back to the podcast where we left off.

With so many options to play in the car, from Alexa, or from pretty much any other device these days, I could go on and on! For today, let’s talk about my current favorite podcasts and how I track them for school.

Mysteries About True Histories (M.A.T.H)

Mysteries About True Histories is a funny, friendship-filled adventure where the characters travel through time and interact with real people and events from history! My girly remembers historical events shockingly well because she feels like she experienced them alongside the characters! It is also packed with real-life math explanations and constantly shows why math is useful in everyday situations!

How I track it: Misc Core

Patrick Picklebottom

This one is a continuing mystery story, so every episode builds on the last and you really have to pay attention to what’s happening! My girly listens for clues, remembers details from earlier episodes, and tries to solve the mystery before the characters figure it out! It naturally strengthens logic, reasoning, and listening comprehension without feeling like school at all!

How I track it: Math (logic) or Reading

Tiny Theologians

Each episode focuses on one attribute of God and works alphabetically through the Theology ABCs in a way kids can actually grasp! The theology is meaningful but explained clearly through stories, examples, and catchy songs that stick in your head all day! It sparks great conversations in our house and even my toddler happily joins in for the music!

How I track it: Social Studies or Reading

Daily Audio Bible

This podcast walks listeners through the entire Bible in one year with daily scripture readings. After the reading there is a short devotional reflection that helps connect what was read to everyday life and understanding. I love digging into scripture consistently. I hear something new, something I needed every time!

How I track it: Social Studies

Anne of Green Gables and
Anne of Avonlea

These classic novels are presented in mildly dramatized audio form, which makes the characters feel vivid and engaging. My girly gets completely pulled into Anne’s world and we pause all the time to talk about her choices, relationships, and character growth! It feels cozy but absolutely counts as real literature study and comprehension practice.

How I track it: Reading

Lateral with Tom Scott

We treat this one like a family puzzle challenge and try to solve it before the people on the podcast do. The situations require creative thinking, asking smart questions, and explaining reasoning clearly to others as well as collaboration to figure out the story. My girly loves the challenge of listening to the clues and putting them all together to guess. This podcast is a STRETCH for her right now, but a good one.

How I track it: Math (logic) or Language Arts

Brains On

Brains On answers real science questions kids ask and explains the concepts in a fun, upbeat way that never talks down to them! Episodes often include experiments, expert interviews, and silly segments that keep attention while still teaching real scientific ideas! My girly almost always ends up asking follow-up questions afterward, which is exactly what I want from science learning!

How I track it: Science

Smash Boom Best

Every episode is a friendly debate between two topics like Minecraft vs LEGO or Cats vs Dogs! Along the way they teach logical fallacies, how arguments work, and how to recognize weak reasoning without it feeling like a lesson. My girly and I now points out bad arguments in everyday life because of this show.

How I track it: Language Arts

Forever Ago

Forever Ago dives into strange and surprising moments from history in a really fun, story-driven way! The hostess is joined by a different kid co-host each episode, and they explore questions like where everyday things came from and why people used to believe certain ideas. Every episode also includes a game we can play along with, which my girly loves and my toddler happily babbles through like he’s participating.

How I track it: Social Studies

Million Bazillion

Million Bazillion is basically financial literacy turned into an adventure story about money. The hosts tackle big questions like earning, saving, investing, and how the economy works, but they explain it in a way kids can actually understand and enjoy! It makes topics that normally sound boring feel exciting and accessable for everyone.

How I track it: Math or Social Studies or Misc Core

Audiobooks

There are too many audiobooks to count that we love to listen to! Harry Potter, the Full Cast Edition on Audible is our current go to, but we also love THe Boxcar Children, Magic Treehouse, The Chronicles of Narnia, Nancy Drew, and SO MANY more!

How I track it: Reading - unless it is something specific to do with Science or Social Studies, then I track based on what I felt she got out of the book.

Quick Tracking Tip for Anything That Cover Multiple Subjects

Some things could count for more than one subject depending on your vibes, but here’s the rule: you can only log the time once.

30 minutes on the app = 30 minutes Reading or 30 minutes Social Studies.
You can split it if you want (e.g., 15 min Reading + 15 min Social Studies), but the total cannot exceed actual time spent.
